My Why

Throughout my life, I have been committed to creating safe/inclusive spaces where people can more easily access their authentic selves and thrive. I believe that reading and writing provide healing and connection, and their powerful impact on my life inspired me to open WordHaven BookHouse.

I discovered Sheboygan 27 years ago and knew that someday I would live here. I moved here in July of 2022 and have worked with a bunch of other folks to try and help our community to be more equitable. My experiences as a high school English teacher, a Minnesota State Teacher of the Year, a TeamBuilder, an Equity Consultant, a Bookseller of the Year, and a writer/author have all helped me prepare for this journey. And my background in social services/nonprofit work has deeply impacted my approach.

I am so grateful to all of the wonderful volunteers and community members who have helped me create such a creative and welcoming space. We have events and products that represent a myriad of identities so that people can see themselves in our shop, AND increase their empathy for themselves and others.
