Author Event: Stephen Goldhahn (Beneath the Maize)

Beneath the Maize is a magical realism Sci-Fi folk tale set in modern-day Sheboygan County, Wisconsin.

In the summer of 1999, a little girl mysteriously vanishes in a Wisconsin cornfield during a friendly game of hide-and-seek. Over the next sixteen years, the list of missing persons in Sheboygan County only grows. GMO corn, giant mushrooms, crop circles, sinkholes, Native American folklore…could there be a connection?

Luke Kramer, a young, aspiring news reporter, teams up with UW Madison botanist Aiyanna-Nez Black Bear, a Sheboygan County sheriff’s detective (Dan Meyers), and his rookie deputy (Sam Riley) to find the answer.

Aiyanna, of Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) Native American descent, introduces Luke to the traditions and legends of her people. But the situation rapidly devolves into turmoil and chaos as Luke and Aiyanna must deal with forces beyond their control from the depths of Underworld realms grounded in Ho-Chuck myth and shamanistic religious beliefs.

In the words of Sheriff’s Detective Dan Meyers: “A modern-day legend born of desperation and love.”

Retired engineer, part-time musician, singer/songwriter, and history buff.

Stephen Goldhahn, a consulting process engineer by profession, received his master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Maryland and spent the major portion of his professional career working in the food and biopharmaceutical industries.

Over the years he has enjoyed mixing it up with his creative side as a part-time musician, singer/songwriter, and history buff. In the eighties he helped to establish an original rock band and, together with his brother, Ron, formed an independent record label to record and promote their music.

His appetite for creative writing evolved from his song writing experience. His debut novel, Greenwich: The Final Project, a historical sci-fi time-travel mystery, was well received and established him as a respected author. Recently retired from the consulting business, Stephen is now able to devote more time to writing and traveling with his wife, Janet, of thirty-plus years. They make their home in south Jersey and are the proud parents of two grown sons, Kevin and Michael.
