Banned BookClub w/ Ryan Burg: Maus

This month we will be discussing: Maus by Art Spiegelman.

This session will be led by Sheboygan School Board Member, Ryan Burg.

Everyone is welcome! This is a FREE event.

The definitive edition of the graphic novel acclaimed as “the most affecting and successful narrative ever done about the Holocaust” (Wall Street Journal) and “the first masterpiece in comic book history” (The New Yorker) • PULITZER PRIZE WINNER • One of Variety’s “Banned and Challenged Books Everyone Should Read”

A brutally moving work of art—widely hailed as the greatest graphic novel ever written—
Maus recounts the chilling experiences of the author’s father during the Holocaust, with Jews drawn as wide-eyed mice and Nazis as menacing cats.

Maus is a haunting tale within a tale, weaving the author’s account of his tortured relationship with his aging father into an astonishing retelling of one of history's most unspeakable tragedies. It is an unforgettable story of survival and a disarming look at the legacy of trauma.

As a parent, one of Ryan's favorite activities was reading chapter books to his then young children. Through their shared experiences with him, Max and Alex still remember how to make sugar snow from Little House In The Big Woods, what Winnie the Pooh called Heffalumps and Woozles really are, and the definition of the word allegory from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. His love of reading to young kids is just as strong today, as Ryan volunteers at Bookworm Gardens regularly. Ryan currently serves on the Sheboygan Area School District Board of Education, a position he has held for 11 years; and is also a Senior Associate at HSA Bank.
