WordHaven is partnering with Sheboygan County Humane Society to share some quality time with humans, adoptable pets, and books!
A representative from the Humane Society will be here with applications if you find a love match with one of the adoptable pets in attendance at this event.
This month, local author and Poet Laureate, Lisa Vihos, will be reading poems to the audience! (And maybe some memoir if we are lucky.)

Hank is the adoptable pet for this day!
Hank is an 8 year old male German Shepard mix. He is a favorite among staff and volunteers, and has been at HSSC for quite some time – but we can’t figure out why! He is such a sweet old man who doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He likes companionship, but also likes to do his own thing sometimes. He’s not very active, but does enjoy short walks. Hank’s original owner passed away, and he’s been through 2 other homes that were just not the right fit. He would prefer to be in a home with dogs that wouldn’t pester him, but would also do fine on his own. He’s been around kids here at the shelter, and was just fine with them, but again, if they pester him he will probably get annoyed. He just needs a good “retirement” home to call his own! He’s seriously the best boy.
Lisa Vihos received her BA in Art History from Vassar College in 1981 and an MA in Art History from the University of Michigan in 1985. She worked as an art museum educator for twenty years in Los Angeles and then here, in Sheboygan.
Since 2011, Vihos has published four chapbooks of her poetry and has received multiple awards from the Wisconsin Fellowship of Poets and the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts & Letters. She's served as an organizer for 100 Thousand Poets for Change and been a five-time guest blogger for the Best American Poetry.
She''s edited three poetry anthologies and was the founding poetry editor of Stoneboat Literary Journal, a post she held for ten years. In 2020, Vihos was named the first poet laureate of Sheboygan where she hosts the podcast, Poetry on Air.
