Focus: Character
Have you ever read a book where the setting was so vivid that you felt like you were living in the world with the characters? In this class we will explore how the setting of a novel is one of the most important ways to immerse a reader into the plot and action. We will analyze how the setting of a book is often just as important as the main character(s). Using mentor texts to explore the setting, we will also participate in multiple writing activities, discussions, and independent writing. By the end of the class, young writers will come away with the creation of their own written world.
As a class, we will read the mentor text and discuss it, alongside another mentor text reading during class. We will use these texts, as well as fun writing activities, as the basis of our discussion. Students will then have independent time to write their own "setting."
